Seraphina

“She was a double saint for my double life.”

Four decades of peace have done very little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Tensions only become higher as the treaty’s anniversary draws close.

One person has reason to fear both dragons and humans- Seraphina Dombegh. She is an unusually gifted musician, and joins the court as such when a member of the royal family is killed. The rivalry between dragons and humans increases, as the royal was killed in a suspiciously draconian way. As she is drawn into the investigation, Seraphina works alongside the captain of the Queen’s Guard. As they reveal a secret of a sinister plot to destroy the fragile peace, Seraphina must also protect her own secret, the one behind her musical gift.

A secret that could mean her very life if it were to be uncovered.

The theme of this book includes identity, loyalty, and understanding another culture.

This book is set in a fantastical world ruled by royals, where dragons and humans both live. The dragons are able to fold themselves into human forms. This allows them to attend the court as ambassadors, and lend their mathematical minds to universities as teachers or scholars.

Seraphina has a secret, one that even the reader doesn’t know at first. It is hinted that Seraphina is different from others in the beginning, but the book never states exactly why. She is likable, being kind and musically inclined. Omar, Seraphina’s instructor, is also likable. He seems to be confused by emotions, and seems almost emotionless. Rather than making him a bland character, his remarks on human emotions adds humor to the action-based story.

This book contains mentions of violence and death.

This book kept me turning the pages; at first to figure out what Seraphina’s secret is, then to see what happens when it is discovered. The world is well structured and leaves no confusion as to why events unfold the way they do. The plot was also unique and interesting, full of twists and turns that capture the reader’s attention.

People who enjoyed reading this book may also enjoy The Mirrorwood, another book where the main character must keep their true identity a secret.
