Darwin’s Dragons

“A soaring giant of glinting gold. A dragon.”

In 1835, a cabin boy named Syms Covington is on the voyage of a lifetime, traveling with the famous scientist Charles Darwin to the Galapagos Islands.

During a huge storm, Syms falls overboard and is washed up on an unexplored island. While Syms is stranded there, he makes a discovery that would change the world. Now, it’s not just Sym’s own survival at stake. The future of an undiscovered species is in his hands.

The theme of this book includes survival and friendship.

This book is a work of historical fiction, taking place in 1835. Syms travels between England, onboard a ship, and to an unexplored  island. The reader is first introduced to the story during Charles Darwin’s journey to the Galapagos Islands.

Most of the characters featured in the story were real people, though liberty was taken in writing their personalities. The main character, Syms, is a fictional cabin boy aboard the same ship as Charles Darwin. I enjoyed reading about his character, especially seeing how much he cared about the new species.

This book contains mentions of fire, lava, and being washed overboard.

I enjoyed reading this book and its creative plot, with the discovery of dragons hidden on an island in the Galapagos.  I’ve always enjoyed nature shows featuring the Galapagos Islands, and that combined with my love for dragons made this book well worth reading. It was well written to resemble that time period, which I enjoyed. It’s difficult to accurately write a time period that is far different from our own. I find it interesting to see the way people talked and their mannerisms. I also enjoyed Syms’s character, because he cared more about the well-being of the animals than fame or anything similar.

People who enjoyed reading Darwin’s Dragons may also enjoy Endling.
