Endling: The Last
“I just did not want to be the last to live.”
Byx, though she is the youngest and smallest, has always been a part of something bigger. A family, a pack. Until Byx finds herself by herself- the last darine. The Endling.
For Byx’s kind, pack is everything. So she is determined to make sure whether or not the tales she has heard, of other darines, are true. Byx sets out on an adventure, crossing the warring kingdom of Nedarra. On her journey, she meets allies and friends with their own purpose in joining her; Tobble, Khara, Renzo, and Gambler.
They begin the journey as friends and become family, together discovering a secret that threatens not only the darines…
but every other creature in their world.

The theme of this book is about the extinction of species and perseverance.
This story is set in a fantastical world, most similar to the medieval era. This world contains several fantastical species, set into a sort of hierarchy. These species are unique, only a few containing similarities to the creatures featured in mythology.
The characters become friends despite differences in their backgrounds and personalities. They also gave the author the chance to tell the reader about the other species during suitable moments, rather than describing it all at once.
There is violence featured in this book, and a mention of dead bodies.
Though this book is more violent than the others, I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are creative, with distinct personalities, and the book brings to light the threat of extinction. In the book, the main conflict is the fact that Byx is an Endling, the last of her species. The darines were killed by the humans, who ‘didn’t understand the balance of life.’ This also connects to the real world, where several species are nearing or have gone extinct because of humans.
