Fireborn

“‘Think about the person you want to be.’”

Twelve became a Huntling, giving up her name and former identity in order to train to battle monsters. However, Twelve secretly builds her skills not to slay monsters, but to take her revenge on those who killed her entire family.

When Twelve’s new home is suddenly attacked, a fellow huntling called Seven is taken. Twelve takes it upon herself to rescue Seven alone; until she is joined by Five, Six, and the Guardian of the Lodge. Their journey sends them far from all they know and on a path that will reveal dark secrets about their world; and the past Twelve tried to hide.

The theme of this book is acceptance and forgiving.

This book takes place in a magical world where every person comes from a clan, and where magical creatures roam. The book takes place in the Hunting Lodge, where people train to fight monsters, and the Frozen Forest, a place many of those monsters call home.

The main character, Twelve, is fierce and determined when it comes to avenging her family. She’s also a loner, avoiding the other Huntlings. Despite her attempts

to do things alone, Twelve comes to care for Seven, a huntling who reminds

Twelve of her sister who died several years ago…

When Seven is taken, Twelve becomes a reluctant companion to the Guardian of the Lodge, Dog, and two other huntlings; Five and Six. Despite her rivalry with Five, Twelve finds herself coming to care about them throughout their journey.

The plot and setting within the story were interesting, with facts and revelations being provided throughout the story rather than all at once. The Hunting Lodge, with the stone guardian and plenty of closely guarded secrets, and the ever-changing Frozen Forest, full of dark and deadly creatures, were both imaginative and (in some cases) terrifying. The plot became even more interesting when secrets kept from even the reader were abruptly revealed, reigniting conflict between the characters. I enjoyed how, even despite this newfound hostility, the characters worked together.
