The School for Whatnots

“No matter what anyone tells you, I’m real.”

Max and Josie met in kindergarten, and have been inseparable ever since. The summer after fifth grade, however, Josie disappears. Leaving behind only a note, and something about ‘Whatnot Rules”.

With the help of new allies, Max sets out to find out what happened to Josie, and whatever Whatnots are. At the same time, Josie herself searches for him. Their quests will not be easy, because some force is trying to keep them apart… and Josie was never supposed to be real.

The School For Whatnots

Margaret Peterson Haddix

Publisher: Katherine Tegan Books

289 Pages

The theme of this book is about friendship, and never giving up on those friends.

This book is set in what at first glance appears to be modern day, though is later to be revealed as slightly futuristic. This is shown through the revelation of a type of android, known as a Whatnot.

The characters are interesting to read, especially as they react to the mysteries that surround them. They come from different social classes, with unique backstories that come into play during the story.

There is a mention of possible death.

The book is well written, with intriguing mysteries popping up as you read back and forth between the perspectives of Max and Josie. The world is well explained, leaving few questions. Though a few of the other books written by this author are in the horror genre, The School For Whatnots is an adventure novel with very little scary content.

People who enjoyed reading The School For Whatnots may also enjoy Premeditated Myrtle, a book featuring a mysterious muder.
