Twelfth

“The quote was a clue to finding the ring. And someone wanted her to find it.”

Maren doesn’t think she’s suited for theatre camp. It’s for loud, confidant extroverts, like Maren’s older sister, Hadley, or her enthusiastic non-binary cabinmate, Theo.

After a prank gone wrong, however, Maren becomes part of a hunt for a legendary diamond ring, said to be linked to the namesake of the camp, Charlotte ‘Charlie Goodman.

As Maren connects the clues to Twelfth Night, she and her new group of friends must avoid camp counsellors as they look through costume storages, lighting booths, and orchestra pites - but they’re not alone in the search for the ring, and the camp is in danger of shutting down.

Are they out of time?

The theme of this book is finding out and being who you truly are.

This book is a work of realistic fiction, meaning it occurs in modern day. Most of it takes place in a camp known as Camp Goodman, a theatre camp which the main character is first beginning to attend. The book has diverse characters, specifically same-sex parent relationship that’s barely mentioned and a non-binary character. The characters are also well structured, having conflicts with each other but still able to reconcile. Some characters have crushes on each other during this book, as a warning for readers who would rather avoid this. The crushes are mentioned, but not elaborated on.

There are mentions of fire.

I enjoyed the mystery, and the creativity when it came to the clues. It was interesting to read the normal camp activities as well, seeing how they contrasted from the race to find the ring. I found the protagonists to be likeable, and their actions were sensical based on their past and their current situation.

People who read this may also enjoy The School For Whatnots, another book filled with mysteries.
